NASDU LEVEL 2 AWARD FOR A GENERAL PURPOSE SECURITY DOG HANDLER

Who is the course suitable for?

Developed by NASDU to meet the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Security Dog Handling, as well as the training requirements contained within BS 8517-1:2016, this course is suitable for learners who wish to take on a General Purpose Security Dog Handler role at a professional level.

What is the aim of this course?

To provide the learner with the basic skills, knowledge and understanding of being a General Purpose Security Dog Handler.

Course Duration

Training would be a minimum of 60 guided learning hours delivered over a six month period.   Learners with a totally untrained dog should expect additional hours of training with their dog at an extra cost on a 1-2-1 basis or by undertaking additional sessions..

What are the entry requirements?

 

You must be at least 18 years old to enrol on this course, have a minimum standard of level 1 in English – reading, writing, listening and speaking and hold an appropriate S.I.A licence  (unless exempt).

Your dog must be at least 12 months old, of suitable breed and drive with basic obedience skills.

How is the programme taught and assessed?

The course is carried out by Sean who is an approved NASDU Instructor/Trainer. The mode of assessment shall be by practical on-going assessment by question and answer sessions and by written examination(s). Indoor learning will be held in a classroom and outside training will be in a secure training field. The final assessment will include the efficient safety and control of a GP dog during an operational patrol (scenario) including pick up and indication, handler protection, bite and release and will be observed by an independent sector competent person.

 

What certification can be achieved?

A nationally recognised Level 2 Award for a General Purpose Security Dog Handler

Endorsed certificate from HABC for the Handler (lifetime achievement)

A NASDU certificate as a Team i.e. Handler & Dog (12 month expiry)

How much does it cost?

Each session costs £120 per/£60 per half day.  There is an initial NASDU/HDC registration fee of £85 payable at first session.

Course dates/times

Ongoing sessions until you have achieved the required standard.  A minimum of 60 guided learning hours is required before you can undertake the test.  Sessions run weekly every Thursday between 09:00-13:00 and 13:30-17:30.  You have six months from date of acceptance on the programme to complete the course.  Please be aware the number of GLHs required per team to achieve the required standard, will depend on the individual attributes of both dog and handler.

 

How Do I Enrol? 

You will need to register your dog with our training facility at http://hampshiredog.club/sign-up-process.  After approval you will be able to book sessions online.  At your first session you will be asked to complete the NASDU/HABC learner registration and pay the relevant £85.00 fee.  You will also need to bring your SIA license, an A4 ring binder, lined paper, pen and two forms of identification.

 

Existing Certified Handlers

Handlers who hold current NASDU accreditation can undertake Reteam, quarterly or annual assessments by booking sessions.  They must also be registered with the training facility prior to booking.  Records of prior training must be presented along with a valid SIA license and identification.  If unsure, please contact sean@hampshiredog.club.
